What are the most common questions customers ask you about Drowning Creek Mercantile?

Needlepoint and product questions:

  • "Do I need to buy threads separately for my canvas?"
    • If your canvas is not part of a kit, then threads will need to be purchased separately.  However, we will be glad to work with you to kit your canvas or pick out individual threads.
  • "What's the difference between 13 and 18 mesh canvas?"
    • A 13 mesh canvas has 13 blocks per inch and an 18 mesh canvas will have 18 blocks per inch.
  • "I'm a beginner. Where should I start?"
    • Customers looking to get into the craft can come in for guidance on the best starter kits or simple projects.  For better results, beginners can join one of our scheduled beginner needlepoint classes.  All necessary products are kitted for the class and students are led step-by-step through getting started.
  • "Can you help me choose threads for a canvas I already have?"
    • Experienced stitchers can bring in a canvas and receive help selecting the perfect threads to match.

    • Customers can find information on upcoming available workshops, whether it's for needlepoint, wreath-making, or charcuterie by checking the Drowning Creek Mercantile Facebook page.  Calendars are pinned at the top of the page.

  • "What is the cost and how do I register for a class?"
    • Pricing and directions for registering are posted along with class descriptions when they are being offered.

Local products and community:

  • "Where do you get your honey and other local products?"
    • Honey and wax for handcrafted projects comes from our bee yards.  Other advertised local products are sourced for neighboring artisans.
  • "When is the next market or special event?"
    • As a community hub, we continue to inform people about upcoming events like the "First Saturday Markets", that occur on the first Saturday of the Month.
  • "Do you have anything new in stock?"
    • With a curated, evolving inventory, new treasures arrive monthly and on the change of seasons and Holidays.
  • "What other kinds of handcrafted items do you sell?"
    • Beyond painted needlepoint canvases, we carry a variety of local products and soaps.
  • "Do you carry items from other local artists?"
    • We currently curate a few other products from local creatives.  As our reach expands, we plan to offer more products from additional local creatives.

Misconceptions about classes:

Misconception: "I need to be an expert crafter to take a class."

Reality: We love beginners! Our classes are designed for all skill levels, with instructors who teach each step patiently. Everyone starts somewhere, and our community is a supportive space to learn and grow your skills. You don't need any prior experience to join in the fun.

Misconception: "The classes are just for needlepoint."

Reality: While needlepoint is a huge part of what we do, our class offerings are diverse. We host workshops on everything from wreath-making and charcuterie board creation to cookie decorating and other seasonal crafts. We're always adding new classes, so there's always something new to learn.

Misconception: "The classes are for women only."

Reality: Our community is for anyone who loves to create! We welcome all genders and ages (for age-appropriate classes) to join our workshops. Creativity has no boundaries, and we're proud to have a diverse and inclusive group of makers in our classes.

Misconceptions about products:

Misconception: "Needlepoint is an expensive hobby."

Reality: While needlepoint can be an investment, there are options for every budget. We offer a range of canvases, from hand-painted designer pieces to smaller, more affordable projects and printed canvases. Additionally, for our classes, we often include all the necessary materials in the price, making it an all-inclusive experience. We believe this relaxing and rewarding hobby should be accessible to everyone.

Misconception: "Needlepoint is the same as cross-stitch or embroidery."

Reality: While they are all forms of needlework, needlepoint is unique! It's stitched on an open, evenly spaced canvas rather than fabric. The design is painted directly onto the canvas, allowing you to "color in" the picture with thread using a wide variety of stitches. We're happy to explain the differences and help you find the craft that's right for you.

Misconception: "I have to buy a kit with threads and a canvas together."

Reality: You have a choice! For new stitchers, buying a complete kit can be an excellent way to start. But for those who want more creative freedom, our extensive thread wall and canvas selection allow you to choose every detail yourself. Our staff can even help you select the perfect threads to make your finished project unique.

Misconception: "Locally-made and handcrafted items are overpriced."

Reality: When you buy a handcrafted or locally made item from us, you are investing in quality, craftsmanship, and local artists. The price reflects the time, skill, and passion that went into creating each unique piece. By supporting us, you're helping to sustain the local creative economy and bringing a truly special item into your home.

"Why should I buy my needlepoint supplies from you instead of a big-box store or online?"

Answer:

We offer a curated, high-quality selection of hand-painted canvases and a full line of specialty threads, including Tilly Thomas Pepper Pot and Milan. While larger stores offer a general craft inventory, we provide a deeper, more expert selection for the serious needlepointer. When you shop with us, you're not just buying supplies; you're investing in high-quality materials and supporting the artists who create these unique designs.

"Are your home décor and handcrafted items different from what I can find elsewhere?"

Answer:

Yes, absolutely. We pride ourselves on sourcing unique, high-quality, and often locally-made products that you won't find in mass-produced retail chains. From local honey and bee's wax products to artisan-crafted décor, each item is chosen for its unique story and craftsmanship. Shopping with us means bringing a one-of-a-kind piece into your home and supporting local makers in the process.

"I can find craft tutorials online. What's the benefit of taking one of your classes?"

Answer:

While online tutorials are a great resource, our classes offer a unique, hands-on experience in a supportive community setting. You'll receive personalized, expert guidance from an instructor, learn alongside fellow enthusiasts, and get to ask questions in real-time. It's an opportunity to master new skills, connect with new friends, and become part of a creative community, all while enjoying a fun and engaging experience.

"How is the customer service different here?"

Answer:

Our customer service is rooted in our passion for handcrafting. We're not just here to process a transaction; we're here to share our knowledge and help you succeed. Whether you need help selecting a canvas, finding a specific thread, or troubleshooting a technique, you can count on our expert staff for personalized, one-on-one attention. We're dedicated to making sure your creative journey is a rewarding one.
